Puzzle

The two invaders made themselves at home. They seemed unphased by the murders they had committed moments ago.

“Are you hungry?” Invader number one, Ronan, asked.

“Not particularly. That’s kind of disrespectful to raid the dead’s fridge, isn’t it?” Invader number two, Elijah, answered.

“I mean technically, yeah, but it’s not like they’re going to eat it.” Ronan shrugged.

Elijah was surprised by Ronan’s nonchalant behavior. “Well, they could if we’re not quick enough.”

“We will be.” Ronan sounded confident.

“How long do we have?” Elijah grew nervous.

Ronan looked at his watch. “I’m not too sure, it varies.”

“I thought you were an expert?” Elijah began to second-guess his actions.

“Technically I’ve never actually done this before,” Ronan smirked as he opened their fridge.

Elijah felt the blood drain from his face. “I thought you said this was your grandfather’s life work. That you’ve been here so many times before to try?”

“I may have fudged some details to get you here. I did it because I wanted you to trust me, and if you were going to trust me you couldn’t know that we were entering blind. I’ve studied this with my grandfather my entire life. The key word is ‘studied’. Putting it into practice, my grandfather never got to live that through. But he had a whole replica of this house as a model. He put in every single detail. This is a flawless plan. I, we, studied every inch of this house. We have it. I promise. We’re going to finish it out for him. We already solved it. We just have to follow through. Everything is in order. Just trust me.” Ronan’s reassurance sounded hollow.

Elijah took a deep breath and sat at the table. He rubbed his temples. His eyes squinted as he replayed the events that brought him here. He believed in Ronan. He trusted everything he said. This wasn’t just a little fib. This changed everything. How could he have been so sure one minute, and then filled with doubt the next? He didn’t know how to come back from it. For five years he studied everything. Fact-checked every piece of information given to him. He believed in this more than God. Maybe to believe is to hold a little bit of doubt? He thought to himself. A gunshot sound shot across his mind causing him to jump. The pictures of the three bodies in the basement flashed behind his squinted eyes. His stomach churned. Vomit rushed up to his throat causing a burning sensation. Elijah was speechless. The uneasy doubt that flooded through his body left him at a standstill. Time felt like it stopped.

Elijah grew up with a love of mystery and puzzles. He searched for anything that could work his brain and give him a reason to jump down the rabbit hole. He felt he had a gift of finding the true answer to even the biggest conspiracies. There was a website he frequently visited that allowed him to chat with other like-minded individuals. People would post their findings and work as a group to solve everything from the paranormal to government conspiracies.
